Liver - Wood

The Liver's most important functions are spreading Qi and storing Blood. Spreading is its Yang function, while storing Blood is its Yin function. It's related to emotional stress, menstrual disorders, and emotional issues.

Main Functions:

  • Spreading Function: Ensures the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body, influencing mental stability, emotional regulation, and digestion.
  • Storing Blood: Stores Blood and regulates its volume according to the body's needs, especially important for menstruation.
  • Governs Muscles and Sinews: Maintains the normal motor function of muscles and sinews.
  • Manifests in the Nails: The health and luster of the nails reflect the Liver's Blood storage.
  • Opens into the Eyes: Liver function is closely related to vision and eye health.

Emotion: Anger

Taste: Sour

Climate: Wind

Gallbladder - Fu organ paired with Liver

  • Stores and excretes bile to aid digestion.
  • Controls decisiveness.
  • Controls the muscles and sinews.

Heart - Fire

The Heart's most crucial functions are governing Blood circulation and housing the Mind, which encompasses all mental and cognitive activities.

Main Functions:

  • Governs Blood & Blood Vessels: Propels Blood to nourish the entire body and oversees vessel function.
  • Houses the Mind/Spirit: Governs consciousness, thought, memory, sleep, and all mental/emotional activities.
  • Manifests in the Complexion: Facial color and luster reflect Heart function and Qi-Blood state.
  • Opens into the Tongue: Influences taste and speech; the tongue is considered the "sprout" of the Heart.
  • Controls Sweat: Sweat is considered the fluid of the Heart; it's involved in regulating sweat excretion.

Emotion: Joy

Taste: Bitter

Climate: Heat/Summer

Small Intestine - Fu organ paired with Heart

  • Controls receiving and transforming: Receives food from the Stomach and continues digestion.
  • Separates the clear from the turbid: Extracts nutrients and passes waste downwards.

Spleen - Earth

The Spleen transforms and transports nutrients from food to produce Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids. It also contains Blood within the vessels. It's known as the "foundation of postnatal existence." The Spleen is like a stove creating energy, while the Stomach is like a blender processing food.

Main Functions:

  • Governs Transformation & Transportation: Absorbs and distributes nutrients and fluids from food (basis of Qi & Blood production).
  • Controls Ascending of Qi: Sends clear, refined nutrients upwards to nourish the Lungs, Heart, head, and eyes.
  • Controls Blood: Keeps Blood circulating within vessels, preventing hemorrhage.
  • Governs Muscles & Four Limbs: Nourishes muscles (flesh), static aspect of muscle.
  • Opens into the Mouth, Manifests in the Lips: Related to appetite and taste; its condition reflects on the lips.

Emotion: Pensiveness/Worry

Taste: Sweet

Climate: Dampness (The Spleen loathes Dampness)

Spleen - The Stove 🔥

The Spleen, creating energy, is like a stove that warms and brightens a room.

  • Transformation: Converts food into pure energy for the limbs.
  • Ascending Clear: Energy spreads upwards and to the limbs (Spleen Qi ascends).
  • Failure to Ascend: Lack of energy, body and mind feel heavy, organ prolapse.
  • Loathes Dampness: Functions best when pure Yang Qi converts to energy without moisture. Spleen Dampness leads to heaviness, edema, diarrhea.

Stomach - The Blender 🍇

The Stomach is like a blender that grinds food into a pulp.

  • Rotting & Ripening: Decomposes food into an absorbable form.
  • Descending Turbid: Digested food becomes energy; the rest descends for excretion (Stomach Qi descends).
  • Failure to Descend: Nausea, vomiting, morning sickness, acid reflux, hiccups.
  • Loathes Dryness: Needs fluids. Stomach Dryness causes heartburn, thirst, gum problems; can develop into Stomach Heat.

Stomach - Fu organ paired with Spleen

  • Controls 'receiving': Accepts food.
  • Controls 'rotting and ripening' of food: Initial digestion.
  • Controls descending of Qi: Sends digested waste downwards.
  • Is the origin of fluids.

Lungs - Metal

The Lungs govern Qi and respiration, taking in clear environmental Qi and expelling turbid Qi. They also regulate water passages and are closely related to the immune system.

Main Functions:

  • Govern Qi & Respiration: Manages gas exchange and assists in forming Pectoral Qi.
  • Control Diffusing & Descending: Spreads Qi and fluids (Diffusing); directs clear Qi and fluids downwards and makes breathing deep (Descending). Diffusing is Yang, Descending is Yin.
  • Regulate Water Passages: Regulates fluid pathways, maintaining balance via sweat and urine.
  • Govern Skin & Body Hair: Nourishes skin and hair; sends Defensive Qi to the body surface.
  • Open into the Nose: Directly connected to the nose for respiration and olfaction.
  • Control Protective Qi: Governs the circulation of Defensive Qi, which protects the exterior and regulates body temperature.

Emotion: Grief/Sadness, Worry

Taste: Pungent (Typical)

Climate: Dryness (Typical; Lungs prefer moisture)

Large Intestine - Fu organ paired with Lungs

  • Controls passage and conduction: Receives waste from the Small Intestine.
  • Transforms stools and reabsorbs fluids for excretion.

Kidneys - Water

The Kidneys store Essence, the source of life, governing growth, development, and reproduction. They also regulate water metabolism and assist the Lungs in grasping Qi. They are the "foundation of prenatal existence." Depletion of Essence is directly linked to aging.

Main Functions:

  • Store Essence: Stores congenital (prenatal) and acquired (postnatal) Essence, governing growth, development, aging, and reproduction.
  • Govern Water: Regulates overall body fluid metabolism and urine formation for water balance.
  • Control Reception of Qi: Grasps the clear Qi inhaled by the Lungs, making breathing deep and stable.
  • Produce Marrow, Fill Brain, Control Bones: Kidney Essence produces Marrow, which fills the bones and nourishes the Brain.
  • Open into the Ears, Manifest in Hair: Kidney Essence is crucial for hearing; hair condition reflects Kidney health.
  • Control the Two Lower Orifices: Manages the opening and closing of the urethra (anterior yin) and anus (posterior yin) for excretion.

Emotion: Fear

Taste: Salty (Typical)

Climate: Cold (Typical)

Bladder - Fu organ paired with Kidneys

  • Stores and excretes urine through Qi transformation.

Five Zang & Five Elements Relationship

Production of Qi & Blood and Key Organs

Qi is the fundamental substance maintaining life activities, and Blood nourishes the entire body. Several organs are involved in their production and circulation.

Spleen: Produces Food Qi (Digestion)
+
Lungs: Absorb Natural Air Qi (Respiration)
Combine in Chest to form Pectoral Qi
Heart: Circulates Pectoral Qi with Blood throughout body

Key Organ Functions Related to Blood:

  • Heart: Governs Blood and vessels.
  • Spleen: Source of Blood production (transforms Food Qi), controls Blood circulation.
  • Liver: Stores Blood and regulates its volume.
